N,N-DMT vs 5-MeO-DMT — What’s the Difference?

Talk to anyone who’s tried both and they’ll tell you: N,N-DMT and 5-MeO-DMT are more different from each other than they are from any other psychedelic. Same molecular family, wildly different experiences. This guide clarifies which is which.

N,N-DMT (the classic)

The compound most people mean when they just say ‘DMT.’ Found naturally in dozens of plants (most famously Mimosa hostilis) and traditionally consumed as part of ayahuasca. Smoked or vaporised, effects are extremely short (10–20 minutes) and highly visual.

Peak: 3–5 minutes
Duration: 15–20 minutes wall-clock
Character: elaborate visual geometry, ‘entity contact,’ feels like entering a different dimension while remaining you

5-MeO-DMT (the god molecule)

A close chemical cousin, extracted historically from the venom of the Bufo alvarius (Sonoran Desert) toad, though today largely synthesised. Wildly different subjective experience — less visual, more ‘ego death.’

Peak: 1–3 minutes
Duration: 15–30 minutes wall-clock
Character: whiteout, no visuals, complete dissolution of self, often described as a mystical encounter
Breakthrough dose: ~8–12 mg vaporised

Which should you try first?

For 99% of people: N,N-DMT. The learning curve is more forgiving, the visual nature gives you something to ‘hold onto’ cognitively, and the experience — while intense — doesn’t dismantle your entire sense of self in 15 seconds. 5-MeO is powerful but should be reserved for experienced psychonauts with proper facilitation.

Safety and legality

Both are Schedule III in Canada. Both are physiologically safe at typical doses (no known cardiotoxicity or organ damage), but the psychological risks of 5-MeO in particular are non-trivial. Do not combine either with SSRIs, MAOIs, tramadol or lithium. Never operate machinery within 4 hours of use.
